Victims’ Rights Skill Building for Advocates

Do the survivors you serve interact with the criminal justice system? Do you know that survivors have rights in the criminal justice system but often wonder if those rights are really meaningful? Do you have the skills and partnerships necessary to identify and help when a victim’s right is at risk of being violated? Do you know which steps you can take if a victim’s right has already been violated?

If you answered yes to any of this, then this training is for you.

The National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI), an OVW technical assistance provider, is hosting Victims’ Rights Skill Building for Advocates: an online, skills-building training for advocates to enhance your rights advocacy for the victims that you serve. The entire training is virtual, and we will use a variety of training techniques including interactive, self-paced materials, followed by applied learning in a live collaborative environment. The training will include local practitioners and state-specific materials so that the knowledge and skills you gain can be put immediately into practice. No pre-existing knowledge of victims’ rights is necessary to participate – just bring your existing experience and be ready to engage with the materials and your colleagues.

The training will have two parts – both critical. Part One will be 3-4 hours of self-paced, online work that will lay a foundation of victims’ rights knowledge. You will have one week to complete this work, and it will get us ready for Part Two. During Part Two, we will come together for a 4 hour live virtual session during which we will dedicate 100% of our time to interactive hypothetical activities designed to concretely enhance your understanding of victims’ rights and your ability to effectively and collaboratively advocate for those rights in your jurisdiction.

This training is for community- and system-based advocates who serve survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking and dating violence as they interact with the criminal justice system.
